Morrison Institute - State of Our State

Greetings!

Next Friday, the Morrison Institute will be hosting their annual 'State of Our State' conference at the Phoenix Airport Marriott. This year's theme is criminal justice, with a closer look at state spending on corrections, criminal sentencing policy, bipartisan reform strategies, and the role of private prisons.
I couldn't be more excited. The keynote address will be given by the former police chief of Mesa, who is now a district attorney in San Francisco, George Gascon. Other speakers include Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery, U.S. Marshal David Gonzales, AZ State Senator John Kavanagh, national representatives from the ACLU and Right on Crime.

This is a half day event, with registration beginning at 7:30, and the actual event from 8 am - 1pm. The goals of the conference are to create solution-oriented dialogue and bring both the left and right together.

Arizona is generally under attack (from other states) when it comes to its sentencing policy, which tends to lean towards the conservative side. This is one of 31 states which continues to uphold capital (death penalty) punishment. I am interested to hear Mr. Gascon's remarks on criminal justice reform, considering the vast majority of those who end up incarcerated tend to represent a certain demographic. This conference will showcase where Arizona is heading with respect to sentencing policies and how funding affects those behind bars.

  1. Wow! This sounds like a great event! It sounds like the speakers will definitely have some good insight into the issue at hand and help clarify and speak to their beliefs on it. It is also great that you got to work with them on this event and were connected/networked in through your internship! Hope your semester is wrapping up nicely.

  3. Hi Avanti! This really does sound like a great event! I'm sure you'll post an update on the event, but just in case you don't, how'd it go?

Through my internship I had the opportunity to learn about the MCAO and the Office of the Public Defender. We got to sit in on a few court cases - one of them was a capital murder case. Through these experiences I've learned just how uneven sentencing can be. I'd be interested to learn about any solutions that were proposed during the event.

  4. Hi Avanti,
It seems like the Morrison Institute held a very interesting event! The timing of me reading your post could not be more perfect. Just this morning I watched a video on a man who was imprisoned for 44 years. Upon being released, it seemed to him that he was almost traveling to the future. In the four decades he was in prison, he had not been exposed to many of society's technological advancements. This essentially demonstrates the difficulty several inmates have in readjusting and reintegrating back into society.

If you are interested in the video, here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrH6UMYAVsk

    Enjoy!

    1. Nehal,
The conference was highly informative and lively, all at the same time.
This video you posted is so poignant, and speaks volumes about not just the leaps in technology but how lonesome society has become...esp. as we rely more on technology, the more disconnected we are as a people.
Thank you for sharing - very touching.
